Elizabeth Jenkins

Elizabeth Jenkins has been creating handwoven apparel for women in Taos since 1978. Working with a brilliant palette of silk, cotton, rayon, wool, and mohair, she creates contemporary garments influenced by Indigenous textile traditions from around the world.

Her interest in weaving began in the mid-1970s, while traveling through Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru, where she was inspired by the deep connection between handwoven textiles, culture, and daily life. Although she learned the basics of loom weaving in Vermont, Elizabeth considers herself largely self-taught.

Her sense of color and contrast has been shaped by years of travel, study, and textile collecting, including journeys to Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, North Vietnam, and Japan. Today, she continues to explore color, texture, and surface design, often using a discharge dye process to add pattern, depth, and complexity to her woven fabrics.
