Maruca was founded in 1994 by Rex Maruca who was selling fabric for the upholstery industry. A few years later, he decided to take the company to the next level by making handbags. He hired a designer and fabric cutter, and began contracting with several local independent seamstresses who
worked from home to create a variety of bag shapes in multiple fabric patterns and colors.

Maruca bags are made only with Jacquard fabrics that are woven using a special loom. They work in partnership with small independent U.S. fabric mills use primarily cotton, rayon and synthetic fibers.

Rex sold the company in 2020 and it is now women-owned and operated. Maruca still maintains a small design studio located near Denver, Colorado where every bag is hand-cut, hand-sewn — and never mass produced. As a USA-based small business, they seek to balance resourcefulness and sustainability, and are committed to creating high-quality, unique handmade products that will last for years to come.
